Susan Gaunt Stearns

Hello, and welcome to the Alexander Hamilton Project webpage. I am currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Legal Studies at Northwestern University. Before coming to Northwestern, I was an assistant professor of United States History at Mary Baldwin College and a long time ago I was a sixth grade teacher in Louisville, Kentucky. I earned my BA from Yale University, and my PhD in history at the University of Chicago.

My work focuses on the political and economic history of the United States in the first two decades of the nation's existence. Specifically, I focus on the role of the trans-Appalachian west in the nation's broader history.
